Some Facts about HIV/AIDS

According to UNAIDS’ August 2008 Report on Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic, more than 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the world today and an estimated 22 million of those affected by HIV/AIDS are currently living Sub-Saharan Africa. The continent of Africa continues to bear the largest burden of HIV/AIDS pandemic. In Kenya alone, 1.5 million of the adult population is living with HIV/AIDS as we speak.

Today, there are more than 600,000 children who are orphans as a result of HIV/AIDS in Kenya. HIV/AIDS remains the major cause of infant and child illness and mortality in Kenya. Most of these children are deprived of a safe childhood, of their adolescence, and of their future as they loose their parents and their own lives due to AIDS.

Background.

In Kenya today, the challenges that face our people are so vast that the government alone is unable to provide the much needed infrastructure and facilities to ensure equal or at least adequate opportunity for all children, more so the disadvantaged children occasioned by either extreme poverty or diseases, especially, the HIV scourge.

Since 1981 when AIDS first broke out in Kenya, several non-government organizations have been started to cater to AIDS victims and orphans. Sadly, most of these organizations are concentrated in urban areas, leaving the needs of orphans in rural areas unmet.  It is in light of this that we, the founders of this organization, brought together by the plight of our people, acting purely on benevolence, sacrificing our meager resources, come together to join hands in uplifting the downtrodden in our villages.
